Artist Statement
I believe the term negative usually connotes something bad, less than, or unfavorable. With reference to my art
and a good chunk of life experience, negative can become beneficial. How we handle difficult times in our lives
reflects on individuals and societies in total.
My sculptures are a study of the relationship between positive and negative space, giving equal significance to both.
My Process
I incorporate my intricate designs into steel, mostly "found objects" that I believe make a unique pallet.
First I use a piece of soap stone to draw the design and then, after changes, I ink in the design with a marker for steel.
I use a hand held plasma cutter to cut the design from the steel. All my sculptures are unique, never using a template
to mass produce. Once completed the piece is powder coated to protect it from the elements so the sculpture
can be either an interior piece or outdoors.
